Our Team

I am an evolutionary biologist with many research interests. Lot of my research has revolved around problems related to animal adaptation new and changing environmental conditions, as well as to find ways to overcome the challenges in differentiating among alternative explanations for phenotypic differentiation over spatial and temporal gradients. Factors influencing likelihood of parallel and convergent evolution, as well as genetics of ecologically important traits are topics that continue to fascinate me. One could perhaps say that studies relating to biodiversity at genetic level would broadly capture what I have been interested about and where my current research interests also reside. I am very fond of Labrador Retrievers.

Ever since I can recall, I was fascinated by snakes and other reptiles. My interest took a serious turn at ten when I received my first book of snakes and also got introduced to the local herpetologists. I started working on snake phylogenetics already by the time I entered undergrad. My interest eventually took me to Helsinki, Finland where I obtained my PhD with Distinction for my work on the phylogenomics of Afro-Malagasy elapoid snakes that resulted in the resolution of the last remaining major grey area in the snake Tree of Life and discovery of multiple new snakes families. This is also where I became deeply embedded in European herpetoculture, especially venomous snake keeping (I was already a trained snake handler and rescuer since before), and my forays into this have been the subject of a video documentary by Finnish national broadcaster YLE. After finishing my PhD, I took up this postdoc position with Juha in Hong Kong. I aim to resolve some of the long-standing debates on the systematic status of some of Hong Kong's most medically significant venomous snakes using state-of-the-art bioinformatics and genome-wide data. As a scientist, I am primarily intrigued by the diversity of reptiles and I investigate the origin of this bewildering diversity using phylogenomics, comparative and speciation genomics and a plethora of morphological imaging techniques. Both I and Juha also welcome collaborations and are always enthusiastic to contribute in any collaborative research on reptile phylo-, comparative and evolutionary genomics.

I am Justin Yongjun Ma, a Ph.D. Student in Prof. Juha Merilä’s lab at The University of Hong Kong (HKU). I explore the complex biology of snake venom through integrated multi-omics. My research focuses on decoding the mechanisms behind venom production and tracing the evolution of venom delivery systems (VDS)—aiming to bridge physical VDS traits with their underlying genetics. Ultimately, I hope these insights will inform toxin evolutionary biology and inspire next-generation therapeutics. Outside the lab, you can find me playing basketball, running, or vibe coding.

Adam Francis

I have a background in business with a career in the Insurance and Finance sectors that spans more than 20 years. Notwithstanding the commitment to my career in business, I have dedicated significant time and energy to conservation and wildlife disciplines with a specific focus on herpetology throughout my life. Over the course of the last decade this work has resulted in the publication of several books on Hong Kong’s herpetofauna and the creation of Hong Kong’s de-facto informational website on local herpetofauna. I also regularly participate in research, speaking engagements and educational outreach. In addition to my adjunct professorship at HKU, I maintain interests in the business world, serve on the board of Hong Kong Royal Geographical Society, am the sitting Chairman of the Explorers Club Hong Kong and am an International Fellow of both organizations. I am most passionate about field work and the discovery of new species and novel behaviors in herpetofauna.

I have loved cats ever since I was a child. Growing up, I would count the number of cats I saw on the streets and name them individually (my first ever population census!). As I learned more about the beautiful and amazing creatures in nature, I became fascinated by a diverse range of animals, which set my path to becoming a biologist. I obtained a BSc in Zoology at the University of Edinburgh, where I developed an interest in conservation genetics. Afterwards, I received a master’s degree in Computational Methods in Ecology and Evolution at Imperial College London. Previous projects I’ve worked on include the genetics of red squirrels in Scotland (Roslin Institute, University of Edinburgh), and the habitat suitability of urban mammals in Greater London (Zoological Society London, ZSL). 


In the Merilä lab, my research focuses on conserving incense trees (Aquilaria sinensis) in Hong Kong and developing molecular tools to tackle its illegal trade. I am also working on several side projects involving leopard cats (Prionailurus bengalensis), snakes, and the problem of wildlife roadkills in Hong Kong.
